Happy Holidays, everybody! There’s no better way to celebrate than with an early Christmas gift: today’s Woman Crush Wednesday. This week we’re celebrating a talented actress who is an utter delight and a gift, whether she’s cracking us up in 1990s Derry, North Ireland, or baking her heart out on a beloved reality competition show. So, without further ado, give it up for your WCW, the fantastic Nicola Coughlan.
WHO’S THAT GAL: Nicola Coughlan
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Coughlan stars in the brand new Shonda Rhimes-produced period romantic drama series Bridgerton, which is based off the best-selling Julia Quinn book series of the same name, and premieres on Netflix this Friday, December 25th. Celebrate your holidays by delving into wealth, lust, and betrayal set in the backdrop of Regency era England, seen through the eyes of the powerful Bridgerton family. Coughlan plays Penelope Featherington, a sharp-witted, kind-hearted and book-loving girl who is best friends with Eloise Bridgerton.
With positive reviews and critical acclaim from Variety, Observer, IndieWire, us here at Decider, and more, so make sure you see what all the hype and excitement is about by checking out Coughlan and the rest of the cast’s great work as soon as it drops on Netflix this Christmas!
WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: While Coughlan had a large rise in fame amongst the general public after Derry Girls hit Netflix, the actress has been putting in consistent and wonderful work on screen and stage for over 20 years now, beginning all the way back in 1997 with an uncredited role in action thriller film My Brother’s War. From there, Coughlan began steadily building up her filmography to consist of a variety of roles, from short films like 2004 revenge comedy The Phantom Cnut, to doing voice work in projects like animated family fantasy series The Fairytales from 2004 to 2005, 2008 family feature film Summer of the Flying Saucer, animated series Simsala Grimm II: The Adventures of Yoyo and Doc Croc in 2010, and 2011 animated adventure comedy movie Thor: Legend of the Magical Hammer, to brief appearances in television series and movies like British drama Doctors and music comedy Svengali, in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
However, it was in 2018 when Coughlan’s already strong acting career began to reach new heights with the premiere of sitcom Derry Girls on Channel 4 in January 2018 and its rerelease onto streaming platform Netflix in December of the same year, thus opening the show up to an international audience and gaining it instant popularity. Coughlan has played main character Claire Devlin in the show’s first two seasons and will return as Claire in the upcoming third, as well. During and since Derry Girls, Coughlan acted as series regular Hannah Dalton in period drama series Harlots in 2018, and appeared (as herself) to compete against some of her Derry Girls cast-mates in an episode of The Great British Baking Show this year. With so many wonderful and dynamic performances thus far, there is no doubt that Coughlan has not only accrued an impressive body of work, but that she also is sure to have a long and successful career from here for many years to come!
WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: While we are not sure what is next for Coughlan acting-wise besides the highly-anticipated third season of Derry Girls (which has been pushed back due to COVID-19), we do know that you can keep up with her in the meantime by following her social media accounts on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Don’t miss out on the latest from this lovable actress who will make you feel very merry not just this holiday season, but also all year long!
