If you didn’t think it could get worse for a kicker than a double doink, think again.
Just ask the Rice football team and its kicker Collin Riccitelli after their overtime loss to Middle Tennessee Saturday. The Owls needed one single score to secure the win in their first game of the season, setting up a tough-but-still-manageable field goal.
Riccitelli lined up to take a 40-yard attempt, but what happened next put former Bears kicker Cody Parkey’s “double-doink” miss in a 2018 NFL wild-card game to shame.
Riccitelli’s kick managed to bounce off the right upright, skip along the crossbar, clang off the left upright and hit the crossbar again, only to fall back into the end zone. Rice would go on to lose the game in the second overtime, 40-34, as Middle Tennessee recorded a touchdown on its next possession.
“It’s heartbreaking for him and heartbreaking for our team,” Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren said after the loss. “Did it hit four times? I think it hit four times. I don’t think you could ever replicate that one.”
Rice made its season debut Saturday after COVID-19 cases caused several games to be postponed.
