Netflix is rolling out some new true crime content to start off the new year, and it looks like the creepiest series yet. Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer is the latest “ripped from the headlines” docuseries to land on Netflix, and it takes us back to the streets of Los Angeles during on terrifying summer in the ’80s.

Night Stalker, which comes from director Tiller Russell, uses interviews with investigators and survivors plus archival footage to tell the story of one of the most notorious and terrifying serial killers of the 20th century. Described by Netflix as an “iconic L.A. real-life horror story,” Night Stalker looks like it’s set to become our next true crime obsession.

Here’s everything you need to know about Netflix’s upcoming serial killer docuseries:

NIGHT STALKER TRUE STORY: WHO WAS THE NIGHT STALKER SERIAL KILLER?

Night Stalker explores the real story of Richard Ramirez, a serial killer who committed multiple murders in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California, between 1984 and 1985. While Ramirez was known as “The Night Stalker” in the media, he was also “The Walk-In Killer” and “The Valley Intruder” because of the nature of his crimes, which often involved breaking into his victim’s homes to murder them. As the Night Stalker trailer explains, Ramirez’s crimes appeared to be random — “there was no pattern” and “anyone could be a victim.” Ramirez killed over a dozen victims using guns, knives, hammers and tire irons, per People, and was a self-professed satanist whose trademark was carving pentagrams on his victims.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NIGHT STALKER?

After terrorizing California for a year, Ramirez was caught by a mob in Los Angeles on Aug. 31, 1985, according to History.com. Detectives had narrowed down their search and identified Ramirez as their main suspect, alerting the public to be on the lookout for the notorious killer. When Ramirez was recognized on the streets of L.A. that day, an angry mob quickly swarmed the criminal and nearly killed him before he was pulled away by police and taken into custody.

Ramirez was later convicted of thirteen counts of murder, five attempted murders, eleven sexual assaults, and fourteen burglaries in 1989 and sentenced to die in a gas chamber. He was denied appeal in 2006 and eventually died of health complications in 2013.
