When will society learn that we can accomplish so much more when we work together? That’s never been more true than in this week’s top picks for new movies on VOD, starting with Dream Horse, the uplifting story of a Welsh town that goes all in to collectively invest in a racehorse that becomes a champion. And sometimes people must unite to help fix a major public health crisis, like when a local kid gets destructive super powers and the town must turn to the indigenous tribe to relieve him of them in The Unhealer.
And speaking of working together, we’re not sure we ever thought we’d see John Malkovich and Tyrese Gibson collab on a film, but the two are paired together as stepfather and stepson in the new action film Rogue Hostage. Gibson stars as Kyle Snowden, a Marine whose daughter and a group of others are taken hostage inside a sporting goods store owned by Malkovich’s character. Kyle needs to use those military skills in an effort to race against the clock and save his daughter and the rest of the hostages. Let’s call it Die Hard in a Dick’s Sporting Goods, basically.
These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!
Dream Horse is an underdog (underhorse?) story about a town full of down-on-their-luck residents who pool their money together to buy a racehorse and… see what happens. Based on a true story, Toni Collette plays Jan Vokes, the Welsh woman who gets the idea to breed a horse with the help of her village, with everyone chipping in 10 pounds a week for two years to buy a thoroughbred horse. The groups calls themselves Dream Alliance, which is what they also name the horse that ends up being (spoiler alert) a champion. Damian Lewis co-stars.
The Unhealer is your classic revenge horror flick, in the vein of mid-’80s Stephen King films. When Kelly (Elijah Nelson) and his mother (Natasha Henstridge) visit a local Shaman to cure him of an illness, the Shaman (played by Lance Henrikson) makes it so that Kelly has super healing powers, and any pain inflicted upon him is transferred to those around him. Which is bad news for the kids in town who bully him, once Kelly realizes what his body can do.
Liz Kocan is a pop culture writer living in Massachusetts. Her biggest claim to fame is the time she won on the game show Chain Reaction.
