NBA fines Daryl Morey $50,000 for James Harden tweet

Even congratulatory tweets among former coworkers apparently constitute tampering in the NBA.

The league announced Monday that it has fined Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey $50,000 for violating the league’s anti-tampering rule over a since-deleted social media post the former Houston Rockets GM made earlier this month regarding potential trade target James Harden.

On Dec. 20, Morey retweeted a Twitter memory of the one-year anniversary of Harden breaking the Rockets’ franchise record for assists. He deleted the post a few minutes later and informed the league it was an automated tweet from his account.

Still, with the Sixers among several teams in discussions with Houston for a possible trade involving the eight-time All-Star, the NBA decided the post constituted a tampering violation.
