Meghan McCain losing powerful ally with resignation of ABC News chief

Meghan McCain has lost her most powerful ally at “The View.”

ABC News president James Goldston — who oversees the daytime fixture — shocked employees throughout the network’s news division on Thursday by announcing his resignation. But sources tell us that no one relied on him more than McCain, 36.

“She should be very nervous now. Her cover has left the building,” one source said.

Despite the show’s notoriously high turn-over of hosts, the abrasive McCain has kept her seat at the table despite butting heads with main host Whoopi Goldberg, and the Twitterverse regularly calling for her ouster.

Meanwhile, co-host Joy Behar has made her displeasure with her so clear that when McCain returned from maternity leave, Behar told her on-air, “I did not miss you. Zero!”

Yet she’s suffered no consequences.

“[Goldston] has for years been seen as a Meghan McCain apologist. She’s used him as leverage against other talent,” an ABC insider told us, “He’s been Meghan’s voice in the room. He’s taken on Whoopi in defense of Meghan McCain.”

They added that when people have complained about McCain’s behavior, he’s told them, “Get over it, it’s TV.”

Another ABC source denied Goldston and McCain’s chummy relationship. “He’s certainly not her defender. Ally would not be the word. Things happen and there are continued steps to solve them. Issues get addressed,” the source said.

A spokesperson for ABC told us McCain has nothing to worry about now that Goldston’s out. “This is ridiculous. This combo of co-hosts has ‘The View’ delivering our best numbers in seven years,” they said, “Meghan is a valued member of the team and no one is talking about any changes to the table.”
