Matt Ryan implored Todd Gurley not to score before latest Falcons collapse

It seemed the entire Atlanta Falcons offense was on the same page. Running back Todd Gurley knew not to score.

In fact, a new NFL Films clip shows quarterback Matt Ryan imploring Gurley in the huddle before the play not to score a touchdown, so the Falcons, who were trailing the Lions by two late in the game, could run out the clock and attempt a game-winning field goal.

But Gurley couldn’t keep himself from scoring on a run from the 10-yard line with a little more than a minute left in the game. Detroit then marched right down the field and scored a touchdown as time expired to take a 23-22 win out of Atlanta.

Gurley said he was trying not to score but his momentum trying to break a tackle took him across the goal line.

“I was mad as hell,” Gurley said after the game.

Interim head coach Raheem Morris, who took over for the fired Dan Quinn, took blame this week and said he likely should’ve had Ryan take a knee to run down the clock for a field-goal attempt.

“We won’t make that mistake again,” Morris said.

The Falcons are 1-6 entering their “Thursday Night Football” matchup against the Panthers.
