Late Night Hosts Celebrate Trump’s Impeachment: “I Feel Like I Just Took Down My Decorations” From the Last One

Late night hosts were in a jovial mood Wednesday night as they celebrated President Trump‘s historic second impeachment. Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers cheered House Democrats (and the 10 Republicans who broke rank and voted in favor of impeachment) who held Trump accountable for his “dereliction of duty” and his role in inciting last week’s riot at the U.S. Capitol. As Colbert put it, “Do you know how bad of a job you have to be doing to get fired while you’re getting fired?”

The Late Show host opened his monologue with a note about the thousands of National Guard troops who will spend the week sleeping in the Capitol in the event of another attempted insurrection ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20. “With this massive military protection in place, today, the House of Representatives impeached the president of the United States,” said Colbert. “I feel like I just took down my decorations from the last impeachment!”

“The impeachment article passed today charged the president with just one thing: inciting violence against the government of the United States,” he continued. “That is a pure dereliction of duty. That’s like your doctor yanking out your IV, or a lifeguard drowning your grandpa, or the host of your book club failing to buy box wine.”

Over on ABC, Kimmel was equally overjoyed by the day’s events. “As a result of that action, Donald Trump becomes the first US president to be impeached twice,” he said. “I wonder if he’s tired of all the winning yet?”

However, the Jimmy Kimmel Live host wasn’t too optimistic about the upcoming Senate trial, which Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said will not begin until the chamber returns from recess on January 19. “Mitch McConnell has known Trump was a dangerous idiot since day one,” said Kimmel, after referencing reports that McConnell may vote to convict Trump. “Before we pat that little Mitch on his dorsal fin, remember this president is dangerous because he was never checked or balanced by Congress. Mitch McConnell is 100 percent complicit in the violence and chaos he had the temerity to denounce this week.”

Late Night host Seth Meyers was also careful not to absolve McConnell, who is reported to be “pleased” by the House’s impeachment efforts. “That’s significant, because if you watch movies, you know ‘pleased’ is the highest level of happiness for villains,” he ripped. “Of course McConnell is pleased: he’s like a guy that robbed a bank, jumped on a helicopter to Fiji, and pulled up the rope ladder, leaving his accomplice stranded on the roof as the cops close in.”
